Ayo Edebiri is such a talent, so when it was announced that she would be starring in a time travel movie called Omni Loop, I was so excited. I even went straight to Letterboxd to add it to my watchlist. From the moment I heard about it to now, with the film finally being available both digitally and in theaters, my anticipation has been completely worth it.
From the trailer, Omni Loop looked like it would use time travel as a plot device rather than the central focus, much like About Time and The Greatest Hits. It seemed like the film would use this sci-fi element to explore deeper themes and offer insights into life itself. And guess what? I was absolutely right.
The movie stars Ayo Edebiri and Mary-Louise Parker in lead roles and centres around a physicist who finds herself trapped in a time loop after discovering she has only a week left to live. While the concept of time travel isn’t new, Omni Loop approaches it in an interesting way. It’s not just about the mechanics of time travel; rather, it’s a heartfelt story at its core, delving into the human experience—regrets, the fleeting nature of time, and the importance of being present in the moment. It’s got this perfect blend of humour and heartache that just gets you.
In a lot of ways, the film reminded me of The Greatest Hits, where the main character is also stuck in a time loop, trying to fix something bad over and over again. Both films use the time loop as a narrative device, but where The Greatest Hits focuses on the external action of trying to fix things, Omni Loop takes a more introspective approach. It’s about the internal journey—accepting what you can’t change and finding meaning in the moments that matter most.
It’s a movie that hits you right in the heart, leaving a lasting impression long after the credits roll. So if you’re looking for a film that’s both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant, Omni Loop is definitely worth watching. It’s one of those movies that might just make your day a little brighter.
P.S. My Letterboxd handle is @BhumikGrover.
