Bill Skarsgård’s The Crow Shines in This Gothic Revival

2–3 minutes

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

The Crow directed by Rupert Sanders and stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven and FKA Twigs as Shelly Webster, has finally hit cinemas worldwide. Since its announcement, the film generated significant buzz, much of which was not positive. The movie is based on the comic book series of the same name, but it is most famously known for the 1994 adaptation starring the late Brandon Lee, who tragically died during filming. Fans have held that version in high regard, and the idea of a reboot stirred considerable controversy. Many viewed it as an insult to Lee’s legacy and the beloved 1994 film. This opposition was fierce even before Skarsgård was cast to bring Eric Draven back to the big screen. The story focuses on Draven’s quest for revenge against the people who killed him and his girlfriend, driven by his desire to save his one true love.

Despite the backlash, the trailer looked promising and built up my anticipation for the film’s release. I am pleased to report that The Crow not only met my expectations but exceeded them. As with most action films, it features plenty of intense sequences, but what sets it apart is the compelling revenge story. Each punch and kick in the film feels impactful because of the emotional depth behind the action.

The film successfully blends supernatural elements with the gritty, intense style of a John Wick movie. Bill Skarsgård shines as Eric Draven, demonstrating his action prowess that he previously showcased in Boy Kills World. His performance is both haunting and powerful, capturing the essence of the character while bringing a fresh perspective to the role. The movie benefits from a solid script, engaging story, and well-constructed world-building. The action sequences are well-choreographed and thrilling, adding to the overall immersive experience. Despite being made on a modest budget of $50 million, the film leaves no stone unturned, making full use of every resource and talent available.

The Crow stands on its own as a powerful and engaging film. For fans of the original and newcomers alike, the film offers a compelling story, powerful performances, and exhilarating action that makes it a must-watch.
