Inside Out 2 Review: Pixar’s Brilliant Return to the World of Emotions

2–3 minutes

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Pixar’s eagerly anticipated sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out is now gracing cinema screens across the world, reacquainting audiences with Riley and her colourful spectrum of emotions. Since we last saw her, Riley has grown into a teenager—a change that comes with new emotional challenges. At 13, she not only contends with familiar feelings like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, but also encounters new emotions such as Anxiety, portrayed by Maya Hawke, and Envy played by Ayo Edebiri, among others. These additions wonderfully expand the emotional spectrum, adding depth and complexity to her inner world.

The arrival of these new emotions sets the stage for an intriguing dynamic as the original emotions are taken aback and must adjust to these newcomers. This interplay captures the essence of adolescence, a period marked by tumultuous change and self-discovery. Pixar skilfully portrays these teenage trials with its signature blend of humour and heartfelt storytelling, a formula that has resonated deeply with audiences in many of their past successes.

Inside Out 2 dives deep into the complexities of growing up, reflecting the internal struggles that come with new social environments, evolving friendships, and the quest for personal identity. Pixar continues to excel in weaving emotional depth with entertainment, ensuring that each scene is not only visually captivating but also rich in meaning.

Moreover, the film maintains the high standards set by its predecessor, blending the original charm and innovative storytelling that fans loved about the first film. It joins the ranks of recent Pixar gems like Elemental, standing out as a beacon of the studio’s creative resurgence. This sequel not only makes audiences laugh and cry but also inspires a profound reflection on the ups and downs of teenage life.

Maya Hawke, as Anxiety, steals the show, both figuratively and literally. Her performance captures the authenticity and intensity often associated with the emotion, bringing a relatable and dynamic portrayal to the screen.

Inside Out 2 is a triumphant return to form for Pixar, capturing the complexities of adolescence with empathy and accuracy. The film balances light-hearted moments with serious themes, crafting a narrative that is both entertaining and educational. It reminds us that every emotion, whether joy or anxiety, plays a crucial role in shaping who we are.
