I Don’t Know What to Do, Am I the Only One?

2–3 minutes

Have you ever felt like you knew exactly what you wanted to do in life, only to find yourself lost in a sea of uncertainty later on? If you have, you’re not alone. Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs at us, making our once crystal-clear dreams feel like distant memories.

Back in the early days of my childhood, I was convinced that being a chef was my calling. I even bought a recipe book, excitedly envisioning a future in the world of hotel management. But as swiftly as that dream appeared, it faded away. Football then took centre stage in my life, and for a while, it was my everything. Until it wasn’t. Cricket then stepped into the limelight, with me joining an academy and immersing myself in the game. I played matches, watched it 24/7, and even have a tooth-breaking incident to prove my commitment. However, just as cricket became my world, it, too, faded away.

The pivotal moment came during my 10th-grade exams. Faced with the pressure of academics, I shifted my focus to studies, abandoning my love for cricket because failing exams wasn’t on my wishlist or that of my parents. Writing then became my passion, and the dream of becoming a journalist fuelled my efforts through college.

Fast forward to today, post my graduation, and here I am, grappling with the daunting question: What’s next? Internships come and go as I search for that next big thing to dedicate a significant chunk of my life to. The certainty that once fuelled my dreams has now gone, leaving me in a state of constant uncertainty. It’s bizarre how we can be so sure about our path until the certainty evaporates, only to return again; maybe this constant ebb and flow is what life is all about—discovering, evolving, and embracing change. The kitchen, the field, the newsroom—they’re all chapters in my story, but the ending is still a work in progress. Maybe that’s the charm of this chaotic journey we call life, or maybe it’s just one big cosmic joke. Your guess is as good as mine. I guess only time will tell.
