The release of Spotify Wrapped is undoubtedly the highlight of my year. This isn’t just because I’m a music enthusiast, but because Wrapped goes beyond showcasing my most-listened-to artists and songs; it weaves a narrative that uniquely captures the essence of the entire year. It’s like a personalised story that speaks volumes about who I am, almost as if Spotify knows me better than I know myself. A quick glance on X (previously known as Twitter) confirms that I’m not the only one eagerly anticipating Wrapped each year. Spotify just unveiled this year’s Wrapped, so let’s delve into the musical journey that defined my 2023.
2023 Wrapped
In 2023, my musical journey on Spotify was a diverse and fascinating one, encompassing a range of genres like Alt Z, Pop, Singer-Songwriter Pop, Broadway, and Modern Bollywood. Spotify introduced a new twist this time by assigning users a sound town based on their top artists, and mine was Provo, a city in Utah, USA.
My standout track of the year was Khoya Khoya by Anumita Nadesan, which I played 53 times. This soothing tune became my go-to during the stressful days leading up to my final term thesis presentation in early June, providing a calming backdrop during tense moments.
The top five songs that accompanied my 2023 journey were Khoya Khoya by Anumita Nadesan, Bodybag by Charlotte Lawrence, Til You’re Home by Rita Wilson and Sebastian Yatra, Boxes by Rosie Darling, and In the Stars by Sami Rose.
In terms of total listening time, I spent an impressive 34,998 minutes on Spotify this year, placing me among the top 9% of listeners worldwide. Unsurprisingly, Maisie Peters claimed the title of my top artist for the year, with 1,135 minutes dedicated to her music, placing me in the top 0.5% of her global listeners. The rest of my top five artists included BLÜ EYES, Gracie Abrams, Elina, and Rosie Darling.
Switching gears from music to podcasts, my top five listens were The Vergecast, Modern Love, Pivot, Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast, and The Letterboxd Show.
Adding a personalised touch, Spotify assigned me the personality of a vampire, suggesting that I tend to embrace a bit of darkness and gravitate towards emotional and atmospheric music. As the year wraps up, I’m already looking forward to what musical discoveries and insights Spotify Wrapped will unveil in the coming year.
