Apple TV+’s Trying Season 4 Review: More Laughs, More Love, More Life

1–2 minutes

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Apple TV+’s charming comedy, Trying, has returned with its fourth season, continuing to delight audiences with its unique blend of humour and heartwarming storytelling. Stars Esther Smith and Rafe Spall reprise their roles as Nikki and Jason, who we now see as seasoned parents, having built a small but loving family over the past few years. In an intriguing twist, the show jumps forward six years, introducing new challenges that test the duo’s parenting skills.

Trying was among the first series to premiere on Apple’s then-new streaming service, immediately winning me over with its warm, engaging plot and well-timed comedy. The show’s soundtrack, particularly the season two album by Maisie Peters, has been a personal favourite, resonating with me to the point of becoming my most listened-to album. Despite now being in its fourth season, Trying has successfully preserved the feel-good vibe that initially captured my attention. It’s surprising that even after all this time, the series remains one of Apple TV+’s most underrated gems.

The first two episodes of season four dive right back into the lives of Nikki and Jason, showcasing the familiar dynamics that fans have come to love, but with new twists. Seeing them navigate the complexities of parenting older children, while retaining their signature comedic flair and genuine chemistry, is both refreshing and reassuring.

Trying’s new season maintains all the elements that have made the show a standout watch. The impeccable comedic timing, stellar performances by the cast, and sharp dialogues all contribute to a series that not only entertains but also resonates on a deeper level. The authentic, feel-good moments are plentiful, often leaving you smiling uncontrollably at the sheer joy and realness of the scenes.

For those who may be looking for a break from the high-intensity drama or the futuristic narratives often found in other Apple TV+ offerings, Trying’s fourth season offers a delightful alternative. Its grounded storytelling, focusing on everyday challenges and triumphs, makes it an ideal choice for viewers seeking content that reflects real life, albeit through a humorous and uplifting lens.
