Hulu’s Goosebumps Review: A Ghoulishly Good Time!

1–2 minutes

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Goosebumps, both the beloved book series and TV show, played a significant role in my childhood, so when I heard Hulu was reviving Goosebumps, my excitement soared. The trailer, upon release, was a sigh of relief, signalling that this wasn’t just another cash grab; it promised a fresh and exciting take on the globally cherished franchise. The show, based on R.L. Stine’s books, released its first five episodes on October 13, 2023. Starring Justin Long as Nathan Bratt, the new English teacher at the local high school, the series follows a familiar pattern: a group of five high schoolers delving into a decades-old mysterious death.

Goosebumps has always excelled at balancing horror with humor, and this series nails that combination. It knows when to be funny and when to be scary, offering a satisfying dose of both. The jump scares are executed brilliantly, and the chemistry between the characters is a standout feature. Unlike many similar series, character development doesn’t get neglected; the characters are well-rounded, funny, and endearing, especially the main ones. It’s evident that this version is more mature, targeting an audience beyond very young children, unlike Nicklodeon’s attempt at a reboot with Are You Afraid of the Dark?

The series retains the campy charm of the classic Goosebumps, understanding that it shouldn’t take itself too seriously. One downside is the occasional overload of storylines, which disrupts the overall narrative. This revival captures the essence of what Goosebumps is meant to be: a fun and thrilling watch. The decision to release the last five episodes every week on Fridays is a bit unconventional; however, Hulu’s take on Goosebumps may very well be the best thing to happen to the franchise since the original series, offering a perfect blend of horror and comedy that fans, old and new, can relish.
